About Little Portugal

Little Portugal runs along Dundas Street West and College Street west of Ossington, named for the Portuguese community that settled here through the second half of the twentieth century — its bakeries, social clubs and churches still anchor the neighbourhood's identity. Over the past decade it has become one of the west end's most talked-about strips: the bars, restaurants, design studios and galleries that spilled west from Ossington turned Dundas West into a genuine nightlife and creative destination layered over the older immigrant fabric.

It's a streetcar neighbourhood at heart. The 505 Dundas and 506 Carlton/College lines run its two main strips, the 504 King is a short hop south, and Dufferin and Lansdowne stations on Line 2 sit along the northern edge. Residents skew younger and creative — designers, hospitality workers, media and tech — mixing with multi-generational Portuguese families who have held their houses for decades. The result is a lived-in, walkable, slightly scruffy energy that hasn't been polished smooth.

Housing is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian row houses, but the condo market is growing fast: mid-rise infill along Dundas and the College fringe, plus loft conversions in former industrial buildings. Pricing sits below the downtown core but has climbed steadily with the gentrification wave. Buyers are typically first-timers and young professionals priced out of the core who want walkable nightlife and west-end character.
