Toronto Neighbourhood Guide

Cabbagetown Condos

North America's largest Victorian district — leafy, historic, downtown-close.

About Cabbagetown

Cabbagetown holds a singular title: the largest continuous area of preserved Victorian housing in North America. Its leafy streets of restored 1800s row houses, gingerbread trim and front gardens — named, the story goes, for the cabbages early Irish settlers grew on their lawns — make it one of the most distinctive and protected neighbourhoods in Toronto. Bounded roughly by Parliament, the Don Valley, Wellesley and Gerrard, it's a heritage conservation district that feels worlds away from the towers just to the west, yet sits minutes from the core.

Day to day, the neighbourhood revolves around Parliament Street's independent shops and restaurants, the historic Necropolis cemetery, Riverdale Farm (a free working farm in the middle of the city) and the ravine trails of the Don Valley. Riverdale Park offers some of the best skyline views in Toronto. The 506 Carlton and 65 Parliament routes connect to the subway, and the core is a short ride or a pleasant walk away.

Because the heritage protections limit towers, condo stock in Cabbagetown is boutique and scarce — low-rise conversions, mid-rises along Parliament and a handful of newer infill buildings. That rarity, plus the neighbourhood's character and central location, draws buyers who want charm and quiet over amenity-heavy density. Pricing runs upper-middle for downtown-east; this is a market for people who fall in love with the streetscape.
